Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

But I believe that good questions are more important than answers, and the best children's books ask questions, and make the reader ask questions. And every new question is going to disturb someone's universe. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

Her father said, "You know, my dears, the world has been abnormal for so long that we've forgotten what it's like to live in a peaceful and reasonable climate. If there is to be any peace or reason, we have to create it in our own hearts and homes." "Even at a time like this?" Meg asked. The call from Calvin, the sound of her husband's voice, had nearly broken her control. "Especially at a time like this," her mother said gently. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine M. Kunin

It is the future, of course, which politicians grapple with, and that is why politics is so disorderly. Only history clears away some of the debris. — Madeleine M. Kunin

Madeleine Quotes By Philip Roth

Within five minutes of leaving the reunion, I'd undone the double wrapping and eaten all six rugelach, each a snail of sugar-dusted pastry dough, the cinnamon-lined chambers microscopically studded with midget raisins and chopped walnuts. By rapidly devouring mouthful after mouthful of these crumbs whose floury richness - blended of butter and sour cream and vanilla and cream cheese and egg yolk and sugar - I'd loved since childhood, perhaps I'd find vanishing from Nathan what, according to Proust, vanished from Marcel the instant he recognized "the savour of the little madeleine": the apprehensiveness of death. "A mere taste," Proust writes, and "the word 'death' ... [has] ... no meaning for him." So, greedily I ate, gluttonously, refusing to curtail for a moment this wolfish intake of saturated fat, but, in the end, having nothing like Marcel's luck. — Philip Roth

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

George MacDonald gives me renewed strength during times of trouble
times when I have seen people tempted to deny God
when he says, The Son of God suffered unto death, not that men might not suffer, but that their sufferings might be like his. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Thomas E. Woods Jr.

The lingering effects of war can inspire callousness even after the guns have fallen silent. Many of us have seen the notorious clip from 60 Minutes in which Madeleine Albright, then U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and soon to be U.S. Secretary of State, declared that the price of half a million dead children as a result of the sanctions against Iraq during the 1990s had been worth it. — Thomas E. Woods Jr.

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Albright

We are very hip on the fact that America's always No. 1. On this we are not, in terms of the number of women in our legislative branches and obviously as head of state. We need to push on that. I hate to say this: It isn't all men's fault. I think some of it is our own attitude and approach. Some of it very healthy, that women want to make choices about their lives and how they want to spend their time, and what they value. — Madeleine Albright

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

If she could give love to IT perhaps it would shrivel up and die, for she was sure that IT could not withstand love. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

Don't be afraid ... " We need this reassurance. Even for those of us who believe implicitly in angels, to be confronted by one is an awesome thing." — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

How long your closet held a whiff of you,
Long after hangers hung austere and bare.
I would walk in and suddenly the true
Sharp sweet sweat scent controlled the air
And life was in that small still living breath.
Where are you? since so much of you is here,
Your unique odour quite ignoring death.
My hands reach out to touch, to hold what's dear
And vital in my longing empty arms.
But other clothes fill up the space, your space,
And scent on scent send out strange false alarms.
Not of your odour there is not a trace.
But something unexpected still breaks through
The goneness to the presentness of you. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

I rebel against death, yet I know that it is how I respond to death's inevitability that is going to make me less or more fully alive. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

The earth will never be the same again
Rock, water, tree, iron, share this greif
As distant stars participate in the pain.
A candle snuffed, a falling star or leaf,
A dolphin death, O this particular loss
A Heaven-mourned; for if no angel cried
If this small one was tossed away as dross,
The very galaxies would have lied.
How shall we sing our love's song now
In this strange land where all are born to die?
Each tree and leaf and star show how
The universe is part of this one cry,
Every life is noted and is cherished,
and nothing loved is ever lost or perished. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

Scar tissue was the strongest tissue in the human body. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Stowe

For the first two weeks of filming, I remember bristling at some of the occurrences on the set, none of which directly involved me. Then I surrendered to the environment, to Michael's method, and became much happier, even though no one knew what to expect. — Madeleine Stowe

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

Experiment is the mother of knowledge. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

One foggy night I was walking the dogs down the lane and heard the geese, very close overhead, calling, calling, their marvellous strange cry, as they flew by. I think that is what our own best prayer must sound like when we send it up to heaven. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

A burst of harmony so brilliant that it almost overwhelmed them surrounded Meg, the cherubim, Calvin, and Mr. Jenkins. But after a moment of breathlessness, Meg was able to open herself to the song of the farae, these strange creatures who were Deepened, rooted, yet never seperated from each other, no matter how great the distance.
We are the song of the universe. We sing with the angelic host. We are musicians. The farae and the stars are the singers. Our song orders the rhythm of creation. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

If you're too happy about anything, fate usually gives you a good sock in the jaw and knocks you down. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Urban

The pessimist says, 'It can't get any worse!' And the optimist replies, 'Oh yes it can! — Madeleine Urban

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

If we knew ahead of time what was going to happen we'd be - we'd be like the people on Camazotz, with no lives of our own, with everything all planned and done for us. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

When I have something to say that I think will be too difficult for adults, I write it in a book for children. Children are excited by new ideas; they have not yet closed the doors and windows of their imaginations. Provided the story is good ... nothing is too difficult for children. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Roux

She left me. All this time she was gone, I didn't know if she was dead or just didn't want me. But now it doesn't matter. I choose my new parents and I choose my friends. I choose the family I made. I choose me. — Madeleine Roux

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Albright

The victor of the war in Iraq is Iran. — Madeleine Albright

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Albright

The system he (President Hosni Mubarak) is recommending would make it virtually impossible for truly independent parties to participate. Sham democracy should be exposed for what it truly is. — Madeleine Albright

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

That's quite something, to be loved by someone like Mrs Whatsit. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Urban

One thing I've learned is, if you're too focused on the falling and how horribly it's going to hurt, you don't see what's around you. You might miss the very thing you can hang onto, something that could stop the fall altogether. So if you stay calm ... . — Madeleine Urban

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

It's hard to let go anything we love. We live in a world which teaches us to clutch. But when we clutch we're left with a fistful of ashes. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Sarah Arthur

writes Madeleine L'Engle, "in kairos we are completely un-self-conscious and yet paradoxically far more real than we can ever be when we are constantly checking our watches for chronological time."10 — Sarah Arthur

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Albright

I think women want to take care of themselves, and I think having a voice in how that is done is very important. — Madeleine Albright

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine De Souvre, Marquise De ...

Self-love makes us deceive ourselves in almost all matters, to censure others, and to blame them for the same faults that we do not correct in ourselves; we do this either because we are unaware of the evil that exists within us, or because we always see our own evil disguised as a good. — Madeleine De Souvre, Marquise De ...

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

One night after dinner a group of us were talking about the supernatural, and one of our dinner guests said that when the electric light was invented, people began to lose the dimension of the supernatural. In the days before we could touch a switch and flood every section of the room with light, there were always shadows in the corner, shadows which moved with candlelight, with firelight; and these shadows were an outward and visible sign that things are not always what they seem; there are things which are not visible to the mortal human being; there are things beyond our ken. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine M. Kunin

I'm not going to be bullied or pushed around by the group of the day. You've got to have political courage. You've got to have your own inner beliefs. — Madeleine M. Kunin

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

We do not know what things look like, as you say," the beast said. "We know what things are like. It must be a very limiting thing, this seeing. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

As I listen to the silence, I learn that my feelings about art and my feelings about the Creator of the Universe are inseparable. To try to talk about art and about Christianity is for me one and the same thing, and it means attempting to share the meaning of my life, what gives it, for me, its tragedy and its glory. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine M. Kunin

The very qualities that make it harder for women to get elected - not being part of the old boy's network - gives them the advantage of having fresh, and yes, clean faces. — Madeleine M. Kunin

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Albright

My parents were of the generation who thought they were the children of a free Czechoslovakia, the only democracy in central Europe. — Madeleine Albright

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine De Souvre, Marquise De ...

When people reproach us, they only increase their own failings even as they are disclaiming them. — Madeleine De Souvre, Marquise De ...

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Albright

I think that we had a different view of what the 21st century could be like, with much more of a sense, from our perspective, of trying to have an interdependent world: looking at solving regional conflicts, having strength in alliances, operating within some kind of a sense that we were part of the international community and not outside of it. — Madeleine Albright

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Thien

What was a zero anyway? A zero signified nothing, all it did was tell you nothing about nothing. Still, wasn't zero also something meaningful, a number in and of itself? In jianpu notation, zero indicated a caesura, a pause or rest of indeterminate length. Did time that went uncounted, unrecorded, still qualify as time? If zero was both everything and nothing, did an empty life have exactly the same weight as a full life? Was zero like the desert, both finite and infinite? — Madeleine Thien

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine M. Kunin

Like art, political action gives shape and expression to the things we fear as well as to those we desire. It is a creative process, drawing on the power to imagine as well as to act. — Madeleine M. Kunin

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Kuderick

Silent sobbing. No one sees.
Weeping like the willow trees.
Feel my heart about to pop.
Need to make the aching stop.
See moon's shimmer softly pass.
On the shards of broken glass. — Madeleine Kuderick

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

Jesus was not a theologian. He was a God who told stories. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

With each book I write, I become more and more convinced that the books have a life of their own, quite apart from me. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Thien

People aren't made to float through the air. Unless we know the weight of our bodies, unless we feel the force of gravity, we'll forget what we are, we'll lose ourselves without even noticing. — Madeleine Thien

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine M. Kunin

There are not many female role models to guide voters, and the tradition that a Southern woman's place is in the home still lingers in some quarters. — Madeleine M. Kunin

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

O God,
here, as so often, I cannot help.
Let me not forget she is your child
and your concern makes mine as nothing. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

The artist is not separate from the work and therefore cannot judge it. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine M. Kunin

It is easy but inaccurate to label any legislation which makes it easier for working families to combine family and work responsibilities 'job killers.' — Madeleine M. Kunin

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Albright

Real leadership comes from the quiet nudging of an inner voice. It comes from realizing that the time has come to move beyond waiting to doing. — Madeleine Albright

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT.
In her attic bedroom Margaret Murry, wrapped in an old patchwork quilt, sat on the foot of her bed and watched the trees tossing in the frenzied lashing of the wind. Behind the trees clouds scudded frantically across the sky. Every few moments the moon ripped through them, creating wraithlike shadows that raced along the ground.
The house shook.
Wrapped in her quilt, Meg shook.
...
The window rattled madly in the wind, and she pulled the quilt close about her. Curled up on one of her pillows, a gray f luff of kitten yawned, showing its pink tongue, tucked its head under again, and went back to sleep. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Thien

It's foolhardy to think that a story ends — Madeleine Thien

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

Our country in general assumes that "the pursuit of happiness" really means "the pursuit of pleasure" and that therefore pleasure is the greatest good. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine De Souvre, Marquise De ...

Pettiness of mind, ignorance and presumption are the cause of stubbornness, because stubborn people only want to believe what they themselves can imagine, and they can imagine very few things. — Madeleine De Souvre, Marquise De ...

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine De Souvre, Marquise De ...

One cannot always bestow all manner of things upon everybody. To refuse a request for just cause is as praiseworthy as to grant a request that is worthy. It is for this reason that the "no" of some people pleases more than the "yes" of others. A refusal accompanied by sweet words and a civil manner gives more satisfaction to a true heart than a favor given with bad grace. — Madeleine De Souvre, Marquise De ...

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

I think we're supposed to ask too much of each other; otherwise, nothing would ever get done. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Urban

Tease," Ty accused softly.
"Do I have your attention now?" Zane drawled.
"You never lost it," Ty responded before thinking better of it. — Madeleine Urban

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

We tend to think things are new because we just discovered them. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Stowe

As we were leaving the Huron camp, it was awkward filming. I think that the Huron watching us was there to create tension - maybe we wouldn't get out. Nothing complicated. — Madeleine Stowe

Madeleine Quotes By Dan Brown

We did not have a television while I was growing up, and so I read voraciously. My earliest memory of being utterly transfixed by a book was Madeleine L'Engle's 'A Wrinkle in Time.' — Dan Brown

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

Qui plussait, plus se tait. French, you know. The more a man knows, the less he talks. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

She seems to have had the ability to stand firmly on the rock of her past while living completely and unregretfully in the present. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

For the things that are seen are temporal, but things that are unseen are eternal. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Albright

As you go along your road in life, you will, if you aim high enough, also meet resistance ... But no matter how tough the opposition may seem, have courage still and persevere. — Madeleine Albright

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Urban

This in no way means I don't still hate you, he muttered as he nuzzled his nose and mouth against Zane's temple and closed his eyes. — Madeleine Urban

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

In the final exam in the Chaucer course we were asked why he used certain verbal devices, certain adjectives, why he had certain characters behave in certain ways. And I wrote, 'I don't think Chaucer had any idea why he did any of these things. That isn't the way people write.'
I believe this as strongly now as I did then. Most of what is best in writing isn't done deliberately. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Albright

I spent my life studying communism and Soviet systems. — Madeleine Albright

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine K. Albright

If intelligence were a television set, it would be an early black-and-white model with poor reception, so that much of the picture was gray and the figures on the screen were snowy and indistinct. You could fiddle wiht the knobs all you wanted, but unless you were careful, what you would see often depended more on what you expacted or hoped to see than on what was really there. — Madeleine K. Albright

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

A great piece of literature does not try to coerce you to believe it or agree with it. A great piece of literature simply is . It is a vehicle of truth, but it is not a blueprint, and we tend to confuse the two. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Albright

The administration does not agree with those who suggest we should deploy hundreds of thousands of American troops to engage militarily in a ground war in Iraq. — Madeleine Albright

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Urban

Zane lifted one hand to cup Ty's face. "Do you have any idea how brave you are?" he asked, the sounds ragged and perhaps even a little choked. "Tell — Madeleine Urban

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine George

Hunger is a blade that carves me
I open my arms and pull the air in
-big hug!-
then poof, right through me, nobody there.
It's only me holding myself.
My arms wrap two times
around my own ribs,
meet behind my back for a secret
handshake.
I am not what was expected.
I'm so sharp-
it's cut me now I'll cut you.
Come closer
closer
No, come closer
I'm gonna make you see what I see. — Madeleine George

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

If our language is watered down, then mankind becomes less human, and less free ... — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Brent

I didn't mean that I'm a nonpareil now. But I'm different, yes. I've found out that I can do quite difficult things if I keep trying very hard, and at least I've discovered that if I don't keep myself occupied I'm unhappy and unpleasant. — Madeleine Brent

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Albright

No matter what message you are about to deliver somewhere, whether it is holding out a hand of friendship, or making clear that you disapprove of something, is the fact that the person sitting across the table is a human being, so the goal is to always establish common ground. — Madeleine Albright

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine De Souvre, Marquise De ...

We are more put off by people who parade their dignity than by people who show off their wardrobes. When people have to trick themselves out to gain attention, it is a sure sign that they are unworthy of it. If we want to make ourselves worthy, we can do so only by the innate eminence conferred by virtue. We hold great people in esteem more for the qualities of their soul than for the qualities of their fortune. — Madeleine De Souvre, Marquise De ...

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Urban

What, you didn't pack your lunch?" Ty asked sarcastically as he
shifted around in the seat and wedged himself against the door. He kicked a
foot up and propped it on the console between the two front seats.
"Sure, in my SpongeBob SquarePants lunch box. I have the thermos,
too," Morrison shot right back.
Zane kept his mouth shut, eyes moving between the two men, and
occasionally back to the driver, who was casually paying attention.
Ty stared at the kid and narrowed his eyes further. "Spongewhat?" he
asked flatly.
Zane didn't even try to hold back the chuckle when Morrison looked
at Ty like he'd lost his mind.
"Spongewha ... you're yanking my chain, aren't you?" Morrison
said. "Henny, he's yanking my chain."
"Yeah, well, that's what you getting for waving it in his face," the
driver answered reasonably.
"What the hell is a SpongeBob?" Ty asked Zane quietly in the
backseat. — Madeleine Urban

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine De Souvre, Marquise De ...

Nothing can tell us so much about the general lawlessness of humanity as a perfect acquaintance with our own immoderate behavior. If we would think over our own impulses, we would recognize in our own souls the guiding principle of all vices which we reproach in other people; and if it is not in our very actions, it will be present at least in our impulses. There is no malice that self-love will not offer to our spirits so that we may exploit any occasion, and there are few people virtuous enough not to be tempted. — Madeleine De Souvre, Marquise De ...

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Urban

No reason we couldn't," he clarified. He — Madeleine Urban

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

Darkness was and darkness was good. As with light. Light and Darkness dancing together, born together, born of each other, neither preceding, neither following, both fully being, in joyful rhythm. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Roux

Sometimes, Dan, friends have to take a stand and say:
Hey, idiot, we're here for you no matter what. We're not
going to disappear when you get grumpy or angry, we're in
this for the long haul. We're in this for each other. — Madeleine Roux

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

Once Christianity became acceptable, and even mandatory, it lost the early poverty of spirit which sustained it when any group gathered together for bread and wine in his Name had to have one ear open for the knock on the door. But don't we ever have opportunities for poverty of spirit, we middle-class, comfortable Americans? We do, though what is asked of us is not as spectacular or as dangerous as what was asked of the first Christians. But it is our response to the small things which conditions our response to the large. If I am unable to be poor in spirit in the small tests, I will be equally unable in the great. There — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

Inspiration does not always precede the act of writing; it often follows it. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By John Sulston

Muriel, my mother, was my main confidant. She was a teacher of English at Watford grammar school but took a break while my sister Madeleine and I were children. She held court in the kitchen, and we talked about everything. — John Sulston

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

A book comes and says, 'Write me.' My job is to try to serve it to the best of my ability, which is never good enough, but all I can do is listen to it, do what it tells me and collaborate. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

I Name you Echthroi. I Name you Meg.
I Name you Calvin.
I Name you Mr. Jenkins.
I Name you Proginoskes.
I fill you with Naming.
Be!
Be, butterfly and behemoth,
be galaxy and grasshopper,
star and sparrow,
you matter,
you are,
be!
Be caterpillar and comet,
Be porcupine and planet,
sea sand and solar system,
sing with us,
dance with us,
rejoice with us,
for the glory of creation,
seagulls and seraphim
angle worms and angel host,
chrysanthemum and cherubim.
(O cherubim.)
Be!
Sing for the glory
of the living and the loving
the flaming of creation
sing with us
dance with us
be with us.
Be!"
- Madeleine L'Engle, A Wind in the Door — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

Love of music, of sunsets and sea; a liking for the same kind of people; political opinions that are not radically divergent; a similar stance as we look at the stars and think of the marvelous strangeness of the universe - these are what build a marriage. And it is never to be taken for granted. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Peyroux

My father's record collection was full of New Orleans music of all kinds. I used to listen to the radio in New York, and all there was on it at the time was Madonna and Michael Jackson, so it sort of passed me by. — Madeleine Peyroux

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

A self is not something static, tied up in a pretty parcel and handed to the child, finished and complete. A self is always becoming. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

We live by revelations, as Christians, as artists, which means we must be careful never to get set into rigid molds. The minute we begin to think we know all the answers, we forget all the questions and we become like the pharisee who listed all his considerable virtues, and thanked God that he was not like other men. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

But if Hugh dies first, would I ever be able to stop saying, "we" and say "I"? I doubt it. I do not think that death can take away the fact that Hugh and I are "we" and "us," a new creature born of the time of our marriage vows, which has grown along with us as our marriage has grown. Even during the times, inevitable in all marriages, when I have felt angry, or alienated, the instinctive "we" remains. And most growth has come during times of trial. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine Stowe

I love the life of an actor because you spend brief amounts of time with other people and then you just leave. I need to be alone a lot, and I need the outdoors. — Madeleine Stowe

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

I have a point of view. You have a point of view. God has view. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

So perhaps the reason I shuddered at the idea of writing something about 'Christian art' is that to paint a picture or to write a story or to compose a song is an incarnational activity. The artist is a servant who is willing to be a birth-giver. In a very real sense the artist (male or female) should be like Mary, who, when the angel told her that she was to bear the Messiah, was obedient to the command. Obedience is an unpopular word nowadays, but the artist must be obedient to the work, whether it be a symphony, a painting, or a story for a small child. I believe that each work of art, whether it is a work of great genius or something very small, comes to the artist and says 'Here I am. Enflesh me. Give birth to me.' And the artist either says 'My soul doth magnify the Lord' and willingly becomes the bearer of the work, or refuses; but the obedient response is not necessicarily a conscious one, and not everyone has the humble, courageous obedience of Mary. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

Almost all the joyful things of life are outside the measure of IQ tests. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine M. Kunin

If we are to create a new agenda for family/work policies, employers and employees have to take a seat at the same table and recognize their mutual gains. — Madeleine M. Kunin

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

Now I am setting out into the unknown. It will take me a long while to work through the grief. There are no shortcuts; it has to be gone through. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

There is no way that you can read the entire Bible seriously and take every word literally. Contradictions start in the first chapter of Genesis. There are two Creation stories, two stories of the making of Adam and Eve. And that is all right. The Bible is still true. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

The peculiar idea that bigger is better has been around for at least as long as I have, and it's always bothered me. There is within it the implication that it is more difficult for God to care about a gnat than about a galaxy. Creation is just as visible in a grain of sand as in a skyful of stars.
The church is not immune from the bigger-is-better heresy. One woman told of going to a meeting where only a handful of people turned out, and these faithful few were scolded by the visiting preacher for the sparseness of the congregation. And she said indignantly, 'Our Lord said *feed* my sheep, not count them!' I often feel that I'm being counted, rather than fed, and so I am hungry. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

Now the red eyes and the light above seemed to bore into Charles, and again the pupils fo the little boy's eyes contracted. When the final point of black was lost in blue he turned away from the red eyes, looked at Meg, and smiled sweetly, but the smile was not Charles Wallaces smile. — Madeleine L'Engle

Madeleine Quotes By Madeleine L'Engle

When we make ourselves vulnerable, we do open ourselves to pain, sometimes excruciating pain. The more people we love, the more we are liable to be hurt, and not only by the people we love, but for the people we love. — Madeleine L'Engle
