In the Latina/o culture, blessing is a big deal. Growing up, I was brought up to see the blessings that surrounded me and my family. As a child, after I'd said my prayers, my mom would send me to bed with a blessing for a good night's rest. Whenever I would leave my abuelita's (grandmother's) house, she would tell me, "Dios te bendiga, mijito" ("God bless you, my little one"). In my family and in many Latina/o households, the women are the vessels of God's blessing, and thus bestowers and distributors of this blessing to their families. To this day, even though I am grown and have two children of my own, whenever I travel somewhere distant or am undertaking a major project, my mother will sit me down, lay hands on me, and say a prayer of blessing. — Francisco J. God wants us to walk in blessing but there are conditions. An "if" and a "then" is attached to every promise or blessing mentioned in Scripture. If we do what He says, then we will receive what He promised. God once told me this: "If you are not experiencing what God's Word promises, you must not be doing what God's Word commands." Blessings come when we learn to obey His commands and walk in His ways. We tend to think that blessings "just happen" to some people. But in reality, blessing comes to those who align themselves with God's purposes and timing. A blessing Emma wrote for herself, having asked Joseph for a blessing right before he left for Carthage. Not having time, he told her to write the best blessing she could, and he would sign it upon his return. He never returned.
