Giving Charity Quotes By A.P.

Love is about giving, about caring for the other person's welfare. Love is treating someone, in the Kantian sense, never as a means but as an end in themselves. Love is sacrifice, love is something you work at, something you build like a house or tend like a plant, brick by brick, drop by drop, day by day. Nonsense. Old wives' tales, old husbands' tales. That is affection they are talking about, that is companionship, that is charity, that is tickets for the Cancer Research Ball. You must ask the young if you want to know what love is. Only they are deep enough in it to describe. We older ones have clues and simulacra, we base our judgement, like pathologists do, on the dents and scars and sediments of hearts long kept in formaldehyde. It is the pulsing heart you want to probe: the pulsing, beating, leaping, dipping, fluttering heart of a seventeen-year-old. — A.P.

Some people want what they are not willing to give. — Brenda Johnson Padgitt

Giving Charity Quotes By Auliq Ice

Sow success and hope unto others, and more success and hope becomes what you permanently reap. — Auliq Ice

Giving Charity Quotes By Blake Mycoskie

Giving feels good, but it's also good for the bottom line. Charity is a viable growth strategy for a lot of companies. Our customers get excited to be a part of what we're doing. If you ask anyone wearing Toms how they first heard about us, most won't mention an advertisement; they'll say a friend told them our story. — Blake Mycoskie

Giving Charity Quotes By Michael Bloomberg

The estate taxes, on balance, are good. They get people to give money to charity, and they prevent these family dynasties which keep other people from having opportunities. It may be good for a family, but for society it's probably not good. And I've always been in favor of having an estate tax. — Michael Bloomberg

Giving Charity Quotes By Jerome K. Jerome

Really, seeing the amount we give in charity, the wonder is there are any poor left. It is a comfort that there are. What should we do without them? Our fur-clad little girls! our jolly, red-faced squires! we should never know how good they were, but for the poor? Without the poor how could we be virtuous? We should have to go about giving to each other. And friends expect such expensive presents, while a shilling here and there among the poor brings to us all the sensations of a good Samaritan. Providence has been very thoughtful in providing us with poor. — Jerome K. Jerome

Giving Charity Quotes By Christine De Pizan

It is a deed of greater charity to give a bit of bread to the poor in the time of high prices and famine, than a whole loaf in the time of fertility and abundance ... — Christine De Pizan

Giving Charity Quotes By Howard Lyman

The more you give the less your poor — Benny Bellamacina

Giving Charity Quotes By Fulton J. Sheen

Giving Charity Quotes By Craig D. Lounsbrough

Contrary to popular opinion, we are all a vast brotherhood of human beings whose very survival hinges not on what we keep, but on what we give. And it is in the giving that we not only survive to live another day, but we thrive to celebrate another day. — Craig D. Lounsbrough

Giving Charity Quotes By Marvin J. Ashton

We often equate charity with visiting the sick, taking in casseroles to those in need, or sharing our excess with those who are less fortunate. But really, true charity is much, much more. Real charity is not something you give away; it is something that you acquire and make a part of yourself. And when the virtue of charity becomes implanted in your heart, you are never the same again. — Marvin J. Ashton

Giving Charity Quotes By Daniel H. Wells

You may give a piece of bread to a hungry person, and when the cravings of hunger return some one else must administer to his wants again; to put that person in a position to earn his own subsistence is true charity; in this way you direct his feet in the path of true independence, he is then only dependent on his own exertions and on the blessings of his God. — Daniel H. Wells

Giving Charity Quotes By Swami Vivekananda

There is another way in which this idea of mercy and selfless charity can be put into practice; that is, by looking upon work as "worship" in case we believe in a Personal God. Here we give up all the fruits our work unto the Lord, and worshipping Him thus, we have no right to expect anything from man kind for the work we do. — Swami Vivekananda

Giving Charity Quotes By Marion G. Romney

In this modern world plagued with counterfeits for the Lord's plan, we must not be misled into supposing that we can discharge our obligations to the poor and the needy by shifting the responsibility to some governmental or other public agency. Only by voluntarily giving out of an abundant love for our neighbors can we develop that charity characterized by Mormon as "the pure love of Christ." (Moro.7:47) This we must develop if we would obtain eternal life. — Marion G. Romney

Giving Charity Quotes By St. Catherine Of Siena

O fire of love! Was it not enough for You to have created us to Your image and likeness, and to have recreated us in grace through the Blood of Your Son, without giving Yourself wholly to us as our Food, O God, Divine Essence? What impelled You to do this? Your charity alone. — St. Catherine Of Siena

Giving Charity Quotes By Derek A. Cuthbert

Service changes people. It refines, purifies, gives a finer perspective, and brings out the best in each one of us. It gets us looking outward instead of inward. Righteous service is the expression of true charity, such as the Savior showed. — Derek A. Cuthbert

Giving Charity Quotes By James Anthony Froude

Charity is from person to person; and it loses half, far more than half, its moral value when the giver is not brought into personal relation with those to whom he gives. — James Anthony Froude

Giving Charity Quotes By George MacDonald

In Giving, a man receives more than he gives; and the more is in proportion to the worth of the thing given. — George MacDonald

Giving Charity Quotes By Gary Weiss

There are a lot worse things you can do with all your bucks than giving them to even a mediocre mutual fund - such as, for example, giving them to a mediocre hedge fund. If supporting the lifestyle of a mediocre fund manager is your favorite charity, who am I to stop you? — Gary Weiss

Giving Charity Quotes By Richelle E. Goodrich

You don't do kind deeds expecting kindness in return. You don't do kind deeds because you deem the recipient worthy. You do kind deeds because it's who you are, and because you understand the powerful difference your gentle hand makes in this dreary world. — Richelle E. Goodrich

Giving Charity Quotes By Alexander Pope

I as little fear that God will damn a person who has charity as I hope that the priests can save one who has not. — Alexander Pope

What my bill would do would be only for refugees going forward. So I haven't taken a position on sending anyone home. But I have taken the position that we have a lot of problems here in our country. And that one of the things that we do - charity is about giving your own money. Charity isn't giving someone else's money. — Rand Paul

Giving the rugged repairman the eye was one thing

Giving Charity Quotes By Various

Kosciusko. - The hero of Poland once wished to send some bottles of good wine to a clergyman at Solothurn; and as he hesitated to trust them by his servant, lest he should smuggle a part, he gave the commission to a young man of the name of Zeltner, and desired him to take the horse which he himself usually rode. On his return, young Zeltner said that he never would ride his horse again unless he gave him his purse at the same time. Kosciusko enquiring what he meant, he answered, "As soon as a poor man on the road takes off his hat and asks charity, the horse immediately stands still, and will not stir till something is given to the petitioner; and as I had no money about me, I was obliged to feign giving something, in order to satisfy the horse." Mysterious — Various

Giving Charity Quotes By Richelle E. Goodrich

The greatest gift you can give is your time. Not money, not items, not food, not pretty cards with handwritten sentiment, but time. People need your presence. The way you can help a soul the most is to simply be there. — Richelle E. Goodrich

Giving Charity Quotes By Francis Chan

Lukewarm people give money to charity and to the church ... so long as it doesn't impinge on their standard of living. Lukewarm people tend to choose what is popular over what is right. Lukewarm people don't really want to be saved from their sin; they want to be saved from the penalty of their sin. Lukewarm people rarely share their faith with their neighbors, coworkers, or friends. Lukewarm people are thankful for their luxuries and comforts, and rarely consider trying to give as much as possible to the poor. — Francis Chan

Giving Charity Quotes By Dan Pearce

The next time you want to withhold your help, or your love, or your support for another for whatever the reason, ask yourself a simple question: do the reasons you want to withhold it reflect more on them or on you? And which reasons do you want defining you forevermore? — Dan Pearce

Giving Charity Quotes By Elizabeth Smart

I have ceased to care about anything. I have no personal ambition, or even the desire that people call me nice, or pretty, or witty. Nor do I have any use for sensation, nor do I care. Cessation. It is a technical circle, encircling, cycle, of giving the body to be burned, but having no charity.
... What can I do? For without love I am truly dead. — Elizabeth Smart

Giving Charity Quotes By James Madison

Because the bill vests in the said incorporated church an authority to provide for the support of the poor and the education of poor children of the same, an authority which, being altogether superfluous if the provision is to be the result of pious charity, would be a precedent for giving to religious societies as such a legal agency in carrying into effect a public and civil duty. — James Madison

Giving Charity Quotes By Madame De Stael

Happiness is a wondrous commodity: the more you give, the more you have. — Madame De Stael

Giving Charity Quotes By Dan Pearce

What would it hurt for me to give that homeless guy a couple bucks? Who the hell cares if he spends it on beer? Maybe beer is a step up for him from the harder stuff that knocked him onto the streets in the first place. Maybe, just maybe, he's actually going to spend it on food (homeless people do eat, right?). Maybe, he really is a desperate human being who is trying to change his situation. — Dan Pearce

Giving Charity Quotes By Ted Turner

The more good I do, the more money has come in. You have to learn to give. You're not born to give. You're born selfish. — Ted Turner

Giving Charity Quotes By Jo Nesbo

Well, Espen, you're no drug addict, so why do you beg?"
"Because it's my mission to be mirror for mankind so that they can see which actions are great and which are small."
"And which are great?"
Espen sighed in despair, as though weary of repeating the obvious. "Charity. Sharing and helping your neighbor. The Bible deals with nothing else. In fact, you have to search extremely hard to find anything about sex before marriage, abortion, homosexuality, or a woman's right to speak in public. But, of course, it is easier for Pharisees to talk aloud about subordinate clauses than to describe and perform the great actions the Bible leaves us in no doubt about: You have to give half of what you own to someone who has nothing. Thousands of people are dying every day without hearing the words of God because these Christians will not let go of their earthly goods. I'm giving them a chance to reflect. — Jo Nesbo

Giving Charity Quotes By Kira Saoirse

You must not believe in charity." I absolutely do, and support charities all the time. I just discern the differences between true charity, which is giving of one's own free will, "from the heart", and forced "charity" which isn't really charity at all, for the very reason that it's forced. — Kira Saoirse

Giving Charity Quotes By Dada Bhagwan

Vitarags [the enlightened one] do not have a desire for giving or receiving charity. They are in the state of 'shuddh upyog' [pure awareness of pure soul]. — Dada Bhagwan

Giving Charity Quotes By Richelle E. Goodrich

It seems a peculiar thing when I go to fill my own cup; it remains empty as if the liquid evaporates as soon as it touches the glass. Yet when I reach to top off the cups of others, my own spills over. This is the crazy magic of charity. — Richelle E. Goodrich

Giving Charity Quotes By Larry Ellison

I think after a certain amount, I'm going to give almost everything I have to charity. What else can you do with it? You can't spend it, even if you try. I've been trying. — Larry Ellison

Giving Charity Quotes By Samuel Johnson

You are much surer that you are doing good when you pay money to those who work, as the recompense of their labor, than when you give money merely in charity. — Samuel Johnson

Giving Charity Quotes By Anne Frank

No one has ever become poor by giving. — Anne Frank

Giving Charity Quotes By Dale Ahlquist

He seems so frivolous and so careless, but he gives money to beggars, not frivolously or carelessly, but because he believes in giving money to beggars, and giving it to them "where they stand".
He says he knows perfectly well all the arguments against giving money to beggars. But he finds those to be precisely the arguments for giving money to them. If beggars are lazy or deceptive or wanting a drink, he knows only too well his own lack of motivation, his own dishonesty, his own thirst.
He doesn't believe in "scientific charity" because that is too easy, as easy as writing a check. He believes in "promiscuous charity" because that is really difficult. "It means the most dark and terrible of all human actions - talking to a man. In fact, I know of nothing more difficult than really talking to the poor men we meet." (pp. 13-14) — Dale Ahlquist

Giving Charity Quotes By Terry Pratchett

Charity ain't giving people what you wants to give, it's giving people what they need to get. — Terry Pratchett

Giving Charity Quotes By Joseph Campbell

The principle of compassion is that which converts disillusionment into a participatory companionship. This is the basic love, the charity, that turns a critic into a living human being who has something to give to - as well as to demand of - the world. — Joseph Campbell

Giving Charity Quotes By John S. Barry

The most overwhelming proof that tax incentives have a relatively minor effect on individual charity is the tremendous consistency over time of giving as a percentage of income. Although the tax code has changed frequently and dramatically over the past twenty-three years, giving as a share of personal income has hovered around 1.83 percent. This measure reached as high as 1.95 percent in 1989 and as low as 1.71 percent in 1985. The narrow range has persisted even though the top marginal tax rate has fluctuated in that period from between 28 and 70 percent. — John S. Barry

People of God are always people who care about other people and it always comes at some cost. — D'Andre Lampkin

My lesbianism is an act of Christian charity. All those women out there praying for a man, and I'm giving them my share. — Rita Mae Brown

Giving Charity Quotes By Pope Francis

We must recover the whole sense of gift, of gratuitousness, of solidarity. Rampant capitalism has taught the logic of profit at all costs, of giving to get, of exploitation without looking at the person ... and we see the results in the crisis we are experiencing! This Home is a place that teaches charity, a "school" of charity, which instructs me to go encounter every person, not for profit, but for love. — Pope Francis

Giving Charity Quotes By Francis De Sales

Frequently give up some of your property by giving it with a generous heart to the poor ... It is true that God will repay us not only in the next world but even in this. — Francis De Sales

Giving Charity Quotes By Douglas Wilson

I want to get the point across that you may not have money to give to a charity, whether that is Ronald McDonald House or Broadway Cares or DIFFA, but you can help RAISE money or give your time and talents. — Douglas Wilson

Giving Charity Quotes By Pope John Paul II

Prayer gives us strength for great ideals, for keeping up our faith, charity, purity, generosity; prayer gives us strength to rise up from indifference and guilt, if we have had the misfortune to give in to temptation and weakness. Prayer gives us light by which to see and to judge from God's perspective and from eternity. That is why you must not give up on praying! — Pope John Paul II

Giving Charity Quotes By David Graeber

Usury was seen above all as an assault on Christian charity, on Jesus's injunction to treat the poor as they would treat the Christ himself, giving without expectation of return and allowing the borrower to decide on recompense (Luke 6:34 — David Graeber

Giving Charity Quotes By Laura Arrillaga-Andreessen

Suggest your children try tithing - giving 10 percent of their allowance to a charity every month. — Laura Arrillaga-Andreessen

Giving Charity Quotes By Richelle E. Goodrich

We never think lightly of those who walk with us on our uphill days. — Richelle E. Goodrich

Giving Charity Quotes By Leo Tolstoy

To accept the dignity of another person is an axiom. It has nothing to do with subduing, supporting, or giving charity to other people. — Leo Tolstoy

Giving Charity Quotes By Rachel Held Evans

While the word charity connotes a single act of giving, justice speaks to right living, of aligning oneself with the world in a way that sustains rather than exploits the rest of creation. — Rachel Held Evans

Giving Charity Quotes By Alan Bradley

Giving someone the benefit of the doubt is not so simple as it sounds. What it means, in fact, is being charitable--which, as the vicar is fond of pointing out, is the most difficult of the graces to master. Faith and hope are a piece of cake but charity is a Pandora's box: the monster in the cistern which, when the lid is opened, comes swarming out to seize you by the throat. — Alan Bradley

Giving Charity Quotes By Tom Shadyac

As I "won," I didn't feel the fruits of that. I felt the fruits when I served others, when I gave myself away ... I've always seen my life as an experiment. I just want to go to what works. As I felt the charity aspect in my life, the giving aspect, I felt a power and I've walked more into that. — Tom Shadyac

Giving Charity Quotes By Richelle E. Goodrich

A single act of kindness is like a drop of oil on a patch of dry skin - seeping, spreading, and affecting more than the original need. — Richelle E. Goodrich

Giving Charity Quotes By Dennis Prager

The bigger the government, the less the citizens do for one another. If the state will take care of me and my neighbors, why should I? This is why Western Europeans, people who have lived in welfare states far longer than Americans have, give less to charity and volunteer less time to others than do Americans of the same socioeconomic status. — Dennis Prager

Giving Charity Quotes By Sophie Swetchine

He who has never denied himself for the sake of giving has but glanced at the joys of charity. — Sophie Swetchine

Giving Charity Quotes By Voltaire

The man who leaves money to charity in his will is only giving away what no longer belongs to him — Voltaire

Giving Charity Quotes By Shannon L. Alder

The greatest lesson you might ever learn in this life is this: It is not about you. — Shannon L. Alder

Giving Charity Quotes By C.S. Lewis

In words which can still bring tears to the eyes, St. Augustine describes the desolation into which the death of his friend Nebridius plunged him (Confessions IV, 10). Then he draws a moral. This is what comes, he says, of giving one's heart to anything but God. All human beings pass away. Do not let your happiness depend on something you may lose. If love is to be a blessing, not a misery, it must be for the only Beloved who will never pass away. — C.S. Lewis

Giving Charity Quotes By Walt Whitman

Behold I do not give lectures or a little charity, when I give I give myself. — Walt Whitman

Giving Charity Quotes By Jane Smiley

The essence of charity ... was not deciding what others needed and giving it to them, but giving them what they wanted. — Jane Smiley

Giving Charity Quotes By G. Edward Griffin

Collectivists would have you believe that individualism is merely another word for selfishness, because individualists oppose welfare and other forms of coercive redistribution of wealth, but just the opposite is true. Individualists advocate true charity, which is the voluntary giving of their own money, while collectivists advocate the coercive giving of other people's money; which, of course, is why it is so popular. — G. Edward Griffin

Giving Charity Quotes By Mark Boyle

Earning money from, and supporting, a system that keeps these people in poverty in the first place and then gives them some of the profits in the form of "strings-attached" aid or World Bank and IMF loans is no more ridiculous than Shell or Esso giving Greenpeace or Friends of the Earth £10,000 to help clear up the destruction that they inevitably cause. Would it not be better not to cause the destruction in the first place? — Mark Boyle

Giving Charity Quotes By Laura Arrillaga-Andreessen

Being innovative in your philanthropy allows you to stride forward in your giving journey; you can marry your mind and heart to turn charity into lasting impact; and you can become more ambitious in your giving. — Laura Arrillaga-Andreessen

Giving Charity Quotes By Rebecca Goldstein

Does God have a reason for wanting us to be charitable, to take care of those who can't take care of themselves? Either God does or God doesn't, it's just logic. If God has a reason then there is a reason independent of God and whatever God's reason is we should figure it out for ourselves. There is a reason and God doesn't really ground morality at all. God wants us to give charity because it's the right thing to do. — Rebecca Goldstein
